Victory Gardens: An American Value

Urban agriculture is a new phenomenon. More than half the world's population, about 3.3 billion, now live in a city. Population as well as technology is exponentially developing, but why is hunger still an issue? Hunger is a distribution problem. Since globalization favors consolidation of power and resources in the hands of the few, food becomes an issue of power and control. I think we can combat this issue by converting lawns and vacant lots in cities into gardens for food. Why waste water and sunshine on grass? Historically, America encouraged victory gardens during WWI and WWII. Eleanor Roosevelt planted one on the White House during the Second Great War and Michelle Obama is following in the tradition. During the campaign, America had about 20 million families growing fruits and vegetables which produced about 40% of the national consumption.
